SAWC: The link between land use and water quality
In Attendance:  Peg Chalmers, Terry Dancy, June Fichter, Deane Geddes, Charlie
Hirshberg, Ken Lawson, Suzanne Levine, Jennifer Palmiotto, Robert Wood

Deane opened the meeting at 6:40 pm. The Minutes for the February 21st meeting
were accepted.

J. Palmiotto’s draft inventory list of potential contaminants will be blended with the
additional information from the Watershed Planning Committee. The source for much
of the potential contaminants comes from NHDES, along with risk levels, 1=high and
8=low.  For other oil leak locations: Sunapee Community Store and St. Joachim
Church in Sunapee on Rt. 11 should be added. There was some discussion about dry
wells in garages, etc. with a question about whether there are regulations to eliminate
floor drains.

For next meeting, members will review their town’s ordinances regarding floor drains,
sealing. Meanwhile, J. Palmiotto will check with state regulations. It was mentioned
that in New London, one cannot tie floor drains to the sewer system.

For April 21st Watershed tour several locations were discussed (Anita’s list was also
reviewed at the meeting): The Stump Dump at New London, which is also a state
depot site, Herrick Cove, Bucklin Beach, Georges Mills, and various streams, such as
Otter Pond Brook, Blodgett Brook, Twin Lake, Chandler and Beck Brooks, and the
Indian Cave area. We can’t do all of these. Jennifer, Woody and June will design a
route around the lake that fits within the time for that Saturday morning, allowing time
for discussion.

The land use pollutant list relative to water quality at a future meeting will be prioritized
down to the “Top Ten” potential pollutant rankings. The prioritizing process will ask
the questions: What is it? How prevalent is it? What are the effects on drinking water
and on wildlife?

Next meeting is the Tour! We will meet at 9 AM at the LSPA office in Sunapee
Harbor.

Note: On May 29th there may be an opportunity to visit UNH’s surface experiments
and display in Durham.
